If it's beaches and relaxation you want, you may want to take a 15 min flight over to Tobago. Trinidad has some very pretty scenery as it has a lot of hills and great views from the higher points. It's not really a place for the typical tourist compared to other Caribbean islands, but there is still much to do.

There are alot of nature things, such as an evening canoe ride watching the sunset through the caroni river. There is the asa wright nature centre, with wild flora and fauna and exotic birds. down de islands, the little islands off the coast of trinidad, u take a boat there n explore the underwater caves, scuba diving, kayaking. the cuisine. Also there are alot of cultural festivals such as Carnival, Divali, and Phagwah, the great race from trinidad to tobago. The mud volcanoes, the coconut grove along manzanilla, the pitch lake, turtle nesting beaches...Great food too. Have some pelau, doubles, and roti. Don't let one person's bad experience years ago deter you from experiencing the island that is much more than a few streets they got to see. From the ten or so visits I've made there, all of my pictures show beautiful scenic places.

If you've never been to a third-world country, the country will be a shock to you. Even the ghettos in America are better. Other than that, you'll have to live with the fact that most of Trinidad is dirty and nasty. That said, there are several sites that are half-decent to visit, including Marracas Bay, parts of Port-of-Spain and this Hindu shrine that is somewhere on the island.

It's a very ugly country, and I can't recommend much of anything for you to see there.

*UPDATE*-To comment to the poster below, I have family there, and I've been to the country twice. I'm actually from Barbados living in America, which is a far better, more beautiful island. Trinidad is just nasty, plain and simple. The people there only want to party, and it's true. I'm not being an idiot. I've seen bodyguards for government ministers at malls carrying assault rifles.

I suppose I don't wanna know why he's carrying so much firepower openly at a mall...
